Podcast #11 Feb ‘09, Listenup.za.net presents HAEZER

“Talented electro producer and DJ HAEZER drops an exclusive podcast and interview for listenup.za.net”

Raised on a fusion of sounds – from punk legends The Clash, Bad Religion and Propaghandi to electronica maestros The Prodigy and Aphex Twin, to breakbeat and drum and bass influences – Haezer has asserted himself as one of the most progressive soundsmiths on the modern Electro scene. Combining elements of punk, breakbeat and industrial music with his already glitch-ridden Electroclash sound, Haezer has already gained widespread acclaim for his remixes of local luminaries The Dirty Skirts, and his remix of Cigarettes and cinnamon will feature on Jax Panik’s new album . His debut album – to be released in early 2009, shows the extent of his talents – his hard, gritty music creating the perfect blend of ripped beats and twisted samples.

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?

I’m influenced mostly by raw, gritty music…so whether it’s punk, hardcore, breakbeat, drum ‘n bass or electro, i’ve always enjoyed the darker grittier sounds of whatever genre i listen to. My music is jumpy but dark, dirty but danceable…

What/who have been Influences in your life?

Skateboarding, tom waits, good cheese, good whiskey, punk, anarchy, nick cave, lou reed, early drum and bass scene in cape town, marukami, gary numan, my laptop…bass, heavy bass, distortion and just electronic music in general…

musically i’m influenced by what i’m surrounded with and what i’m feeling…sometimes watching a movie gives you more inspiration to make a song then listening to other artists…I also try and draw my influences outside of the genre i make.

Who are some of your favorite producers?

Daft Punk, SebastiAn, Mr Oizo, Boys Noize, The Bloody Beetroots, The Toxic Avenger, Justice, Don Rimini, The Prodigy, Crookers, Disco Villians, Soulwax, MSTRKRFT, Kraftwerk, The Chemical Brothers, Boards of Canada, Prefuse 73, ZZT, Plaid, All the ED BANGER boys, Dave Gahan, Chris Clarke, Trentemoller, Fischerspooner, Digitalism, Goose, Les Rythmes Digitales, Console, DFA, Jackson and his computer band, LFO, Kavinsky, Aphex Twin, Pendulum, Gooseflesh, M83 and so much more…

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s

Most of the producers mentioned above, Soulwax, Shinichi Osawa, The Bloody Beetroots, Acid Jacks – To be honest i haven’t seen many dj’s…so my favorite dj’s are made of snippets of sets and playlists i’ve seen on the net.

Best memories as a DJ?

Playing small gigs where people just lose themselves to the music and don’t worry about the coolness factor.

What equipment do you use?

MacBook Pro laptop, Traktor 3, audio 8dj  souncard and an edirol- m 30 keyboard/midi controller

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?

In two words PUNK ELECTRO…in one word HARD…but to be less vague i choose my tracks very carefully, looking for bass heavy, distorted and jumpy tracks that makes you want to dance non stop…I like to keep my listeners guessing, not being predictable and build up my set so that the energy level never drops.

24. HAEZER – Crack in the wall

The mix is called ‘Ugly people dance too’

It’s a collection of songs i always have rotating in my sets and really enjoy.  I’ve mixed it in a very old school, raw kind of way…I think it suits the style and genre of music and keeps the enery level high, whilst pushing some boundaries.  Mixing with software easily makes a mix sound very mechanical and almost too perfect and so i try and steer away from that, but still keeping a seamless flow.

The mix starts off with a quite mellow intro with an element of suspense…I love this track as an opening song to a set, because the build up is just so epic…I don’t play too much of the track and rather use it as an intro device and so didn’t feel to lame playing another justice track 1 song later…

The rest of the mix is just a hard hitting mix of mix genre tracks that keeps the dancefloor jumpy and keeps the audience amped to hear what comes next…Enjoy!
