Podcast #17, Sikksens

20 year old Jovan Retief aka Sikksens hails from Durban, South Africa. An up and coming talent that is being seriously recognised, we ask him a few questions before he drops us 80 minutes of minimal goodness with his exclusive mix entitled “Nightmares on acid”.

Found a love for electronic music at the age of 14..Started Djing in 2003 while still in high school at local house parties/socials..In 2006 I finished high school and started working in the eventing industry and still with it today.Over the time my styles and genres have changed alot and will tend to do so in the future.Which is what I love most about music is that there is always room for improvement and always new ways to experiment!

People always ask me how it is that you can be so into music and make it such a big part of your life, I think that everyone has something that they’re really crazy about but some just tend to show it off more.

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?

My sound at the moment is Dark ‘n Spooky (not only intended for night) - Minimal has been part of my life for quite some time now, I just really enjoy the vibe and sexiness that it has to it.. Its not to much and not to little its just right!

Some people think its a load of sh#%t but there again everyone has there own opinion about things! Just hate it when people criticize something you believe in.

What/who have been Influences in your life?

Gui Boratto,Richie Hawtin,Ambivalent,Dubfire,Tania Vulcano,James Zabiela,Tibcurl

Best memories as a DJ?

My debut at Rocking The Daisies 2007 an Eco friendly music festival in Cape Town! It was the last night of the festival and my set was at 3am way after all bands and other events were over so majority of the festival was in the Electronic marquee. Was Amazing, ended up finishing sometime after 8am..

What equipment do you use?

2 x Stanton Turntables
2 x Pioneer CDJ’s
1 x Behringer Mixer
But will soon be moving over to DVS…

Take us through this mix/set

“Nightmares On Acid is the theme for this mix..It was called this due to sound of each individual track that was compiled into this mix…It was built from my memory of those pixelised 64 Nintendo/Golden China.

(Tv Games)..Like when you journeyed into space to fight off those Space Invaders=)

Basically if you listen to it carefully all the tracks symbolize some type of sound from back then!!(Beep–Bleep)

I hope it does the same for you the listener…The tracks are as follows:

  1. Intro (Just a little fun to go with the Theme)
  2. Cezar & Disorder – Father
  3. Lee Curtiss – Start a Fire
  4. Octave – Flash Past (
  5. ADJD – I Want You
  6. Kaufmann – Nikkita
  7. Mri – Acid
  8. Matrik – Sex With Bass
  9. Gadi Mizrahi – Fingers
