Podcast #19, Emma X – Psy-Technification

“Combination of rolling techno and progressive tunes infused with trippy elements and psychedelic sounds. If you were at Fu-Cha Festival Fantasia or Upstairs at Truth on Saturday night then these beatz will take you right back there”

About You – Biography
My love of the groove began on Cape Town dancefloors during my UCT student days when house was just a whisper in SA and Vortex was a whirl. From there it was London, Ibiza and Mykonos in the early nineties that gave me a glimpse of the global scene and I was hooked! Back in SA I first went into finance and then followed my heart (instead of following the dj’s…), switched careers, picked up the headphones and I haven’t looked back since!

I started dj’ing in 2005, and have since played at various clubs, parties and outdoor festivals in Jozi and Cape Town (Natural Groove, Truth, Sudada, Sugar, 88, Malabar, Roxy’s, Bungalow & Fu-Cha) to name a few. My mixes have also featured locally on 5 fm’s Vinyl Frontier, Deckalicious and Live on 5 radio shows. My most recent accolade is winning best Minimal DJ in ‘The search for SA’s Next Top DJ’ in November 2008.”

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
My personal sound and style have been influenced by the progression of house music over the years. I embrace a cross-genre mish mash incorporating a blend of tracks ranging from deep minimal to progressive and techno ( and more recently the Psy-Trance sounds have been making their way into my mixes and my mind)! “As long as the music moves me and resonates with me and takes you on a journey upwards and outwards”

What/who have been Influences in your life?
The sounds I play have been influenced by many aspects of life itself – most especially nature – open expansive spaces, the mountains and the ocean;  as well as the people and the energy on the various dancefloors that I have participated in in some way. Ultimately it is my all encompassing Passion for Music, Beats and Dancing that has led me to the space that i now inhabit!

Who are some of your favorite producers?

Whoaaa – favourite producers – I’ve got lots of them! At the moment I’m loving Lex Orbit and Ryan Sullivan (locally) and internationally I enjoy tracks produced/remixed by Fiord, Prometheus, Oliver Huntemann, Johnny D, Gregor Tresher,  Ramon Tapia, Elon, Butch, Butane and Yotopia.

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s
Locally I have loads of favourites: to name a few: – Ryan Sullivan, Chris Palmer, Headroom, Bruce, Karmi, Syzergy, John Vichos, CandNutz, Nick Lumb, Jimmy Chronic & Dean Fuel. Internationally my favs include Dubfire, Sasha, Magda, Rebekkah, Phunklarique, Luciano & Radio Slave.

Best memories as a DJ?
By far my best memories are the outdoor ones! Fu-Cha here we come!!!!!! I’ve played the sunset session at the Rock Pool at the last 2 Fu-Cha festivals in Jozi and all I can say is “”definitely the best 2 sets of my life”".  It is the most spiritually-uplifting and soul-enhancing experience to play for people who appreciate music in a beautiful, unspoilt natural environment.

What equipment do you use?
I learnt on vinyl but then moved to cdj’s for various reasons (the most obvious being the cost saving one!!). Most recently I have acquired a Mac plus Traktor Scratch Pro and hopefully a controller is going to be a welcome addition to the family soon!

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
A typical set of mine will encompass a flow/journey of some type. This will usually be a journey upwards but this depends on my set time. The base of my mix is Techno but i will always feed off the energy of the dancefloor  – if the tracks I’m playing work – I’ll carry on, if they don’t – I’ll change them (to a degree…lol!!).

Take us through this mix/set

  1. Long Wave – Prometheus – this is a fairly old ambient Psytrance track that I absolutely love and wanted to share with the listeners
  2. The Game (Milton Channels remix) – BoomCardona – I dig the intro and the way that it evolves into a deep rolling techno tune
  3. Marashi – Gorge, Andre Hommen – you listen and you decide why I like it!
  4. “Rikarda- Oliver Huntemann – well, in my mind this track logically follows on from number 3!
  5. Used feat Natasha – Angel Stoxx; this adds a bit of a vocal element which I felt was missing
  6. Another Story – Cosmo edit”" – Muama; this tune brings the whole mix down a bit to give the listeners/dancers a bit of much needed breathing space.
  7. Manipulation – Johnny D; Aaaah -  a winner in every set – this track just gets the peeps jumpin up and down!
  8. Wasteland – Fiord remix”" – Vibrasphere; you listen, you decide.
  9. Klinker  – Ramon Tapia; thats just cause he’s one of my favourite producers at the momo.
  10. Serenity Now – Fiord remix”" – Ace Ventura; this is the shizdig! probably my most favourite track of the entire mix.
  11. Chirpy – Moonbeam: a deep rolling techno tune that’s truly Awesome!
  12. Zum Zum – Mike Monday: another Techno humdinger that I downloaded by complete accident one day (well hey – nothing’s an accident??)
  13. Around the Corner (Deep Cycle’s 2012 remix) – Noah Becker vs Holosound”" – I reckoned this was a good way to bring things down and end off the mix with a techy yet deep sound. A ‘Complete the Circle’ type of tune
