Podcast #22, Soul Life Audio Boutique

In this podcast, we interview Xolisa Tshomela (Xee) deejay and producer for Soul Life Audio Boutique (S LAB), a record label which is turning heads around the mother city.

Soul Life Audio Boutique (S LAB) is a Cape Town based, fully flourished record label with two producers and three vocalists. As the name says, their music is soul, in the greater extent. Whether its jazz, RnB, blues, a touch of hip hop and down tempo electronica, Afro-Soul with fusions of those genres; as well as deep groove house and lounge soul house.

About You
I started collecting vinyl’s 9 years ago, I really was not happy with the music I was hearing at clubs & on radio. A few years later I managed to get my own decks as a step towards starting to play seriously. My first gig was at cherry jam in Hatfield, from then I played between Joburg & Pretoria with a colleague of mine who was also starting out at the time, He would later be known as Lulo Café.

I now live in Cape Town & since my move I’ve been resident at Vinny da Vinci’s deep soul sessions among a host of other freelance work I’ve done. Currently I play at Soul Life live a monthly event that we run that showcases our labels artists & various guests affiliated to the label.

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
I’m not really genre orientated; I really do focus on music that can capture the mood & ambience of a particular crowd or venue. I do lean heavily towards the world music & jazz sound & it’s electronic equivalent.

What/who have been Influences in your life?
I’d say Osunlade, Radiohead, D’Angelo; they are the stand out influences. But the music the music that influences me from day to day wildly varies.

Who are some of your favorite producers?
In the electronic music world, Daft Punk, Kanye West, The Neptunes , Karizma, Masters at Work (MAW), to state very few!

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s
Frankie Feliciano, Karizma, The Late Evidence Kemp, and truth be told my DJ friends Lulo Café & Pro (Port Elizabeth, South Africa).

Best memories as a DJ?
Playing Kenny Bobiens’ “Why We Sing” at the last Deep Soul Sessions in Greenpoint a few years back. The set I played at our last gig at Ganesh during Obz Fest 2008.

What equipment do you use?
Used to be vinyl now I’ve moved over to digital, using CDJ’s. Moving over to Serato soon.

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
Music with real human feeling, I am particularly adverse to trends & the mainstream sound of the day.
