SFR-HYPHEN

Podcast #29, Hyphen & SFR

In their solo careers as DJ’s and Producers, Hyphen & SFR have established themselves as some of the best electronic talents South Africa has to offer.

Between the two, they have worldwide 12″” vinyl releases on four different high profile UK based record labels. SFR having recently signed his first Dubstep 12″” single to XS Dubz, putting him down as the first South African to be signed within the Genre.

The two have recently teamed up as DJ’s showcasing a completely original and fresh approach to Dubstep which so far hase proven extremely successful.

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
Hyphen has been known for years for his soulful  , rolling and varied DJ sets, SFR for his regga influence and wobbling basslines. Put the two together and you have almost a perfect mixture.

Expect dancefloor rocking anthems mixed together with some skanking reggae beats and deep bassline bizness!

What/who have been Influences in your life?
Sine waves @ 50 Hz ( Google it ) . 140 bpm . 175 bpm .

Who are some of your favorite producers?
Ok.. so this list can go on for a while, but here are a few. Lomax, Bar 9, Benga, Vex’d, Synkro, Burial, Counterstrike, Liver, Mix ‘n Blend, Fletcher, Naartjie, Hazard, Dirtyphonics, Calibre, Zero Tolerance, Comix, Rusko,Dank, Skream, Plastician, DZ. ENOUGH??

Who are some of your favorite DJ’s
Andy C, Plastician, N Type, Counterstrike, Niskerone, Anti Alias, AK47, Boom Monk Ben, Jeff Mills , A33

Best memories as a DJ?
So far as a combined act.. Playing on New Years eve 08/09 at Sound Squad Revolutions. What amazed both of us was that the local tunes we played rocked the dancefloor just as hard as the international stuff.. which is always an amazing feeling as South African DJ’s , hence inspiring this mix.

What equipment do you use?
Standard Dj set up . 2 CDJ’s  , 1 Mixer , 2 Turntables. With the advance in technology with regards to especially the Pioneer CDJ’s and mixers , we’ve been able to make our sets a bit more interesting by using the looping functions and effects , although the focus has been to never detract from the music while still rocking the floor.

There are some amazing new gadgets out there that we may be investigating in the future , but for now we’re focussing on writing the music.

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
Lots of energy , tight mixing , a variety of styles within the genre , a fresh selection of the latest and unreleased stuff combined with the best local beats.
We try to keep the mood varied , from hands in the air anthem rinse out dancefloor smashing bass destruction , to head down , eye’s closed , deep journey vibes.
