LU47, LVS
L.V.S. has been a DJ for 8 years, first learning the craft under the tutelage of Jayson “The Fool” Faber at the Technics DJ Mix Club in Blairgowrie, he went on to win his leg of the D-rail DJ competion in 2005, he followed on with a number of gigs in venues as diverse as the Technics floor at Woodstock ’05, Al’s Knysna, Weldon Kaya (Plettenberg bay), Stones Edenvale, Submission, Roxy’s, Kitcheners Carvery bar and Malabar.
L.V.S has experimented with several general genres over the years and has finally found a happy medium in the form of the crunching, twisted sounds of the underground, Tech-house, Dubstep and Drum and Bass are his main forte at this moment, always with a tinge of darkness but always danceable.
Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
I like to play around with my sound as much as possible, keep it out of the mainstream but occasionally let it dip a toe in just for fun.
I’ve really noticed my style and musical tastes developing and broadening substantially over the last year so it’s all about experimentation and learning. I’d describe my sound as dynamic and constantly morphing, I always try to keep things fresh and interesting, to challenge, engage and hopefully educate the listener.
What/who have been Influences in your life?
Far too many DJs and producers to list but if I had to narrow it down to just 3, they would be:
1. Sasha – I had never heard proper progressive house like that before, when I first picked up a copy of GU013 – Ibiza, I was absolutely blown away by the selection of music and how he put it together, it was more like art than dance music, I remember thinking, “Wow, I want to learn how to mix like that!”
2. Paul Oakenfold – Always a pioneer, I reckon Oakey has one of the best tuned ears in the business, his selection and groove are always impeccable. He also taught me that you don’t have to stick to one style to make a sound work and that you can still work in elements of certain genres into others.
3. MPI project – I first met Mike way back at the DJ mix club in Blairgowrie and started to follow his career, he was one of the first local DJs I heard who played breakbeat and I’ve really come to appreciate his talent and tenacity.
Who are some of your favourite DJ’s & Producers?
In no particular order; Jerome Isma-Ae, Nero, MJ Cole, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Ambush, Carl Cox, BenSon, Multicrisis, Shockone, Camo&Krooked, Paul Oakenfold, Animal Chin, Keren Onay, Skream.
Best memories as a DJ?
There have been a good couple, playing the sunrise set at Woodstock ’05 was wicked, almost nobody on the dancefloor but it was such a thrill to play dark progressive house as the sun came up.
Another would be closing for the legendary Stuart H. and playing a back-to-back set with him straight afterwards.
What equipment do you use?
Pioneer CDJ 800s, a Denon DN-X1500 mixer and Technics DJ1200 headphones.
What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
I try and keep things moving forward all the time, I like to build slowly and carefully and keep the momentum up throughout my set, working through a steady upward curve, a little tease here, a subtlety there until I really take the breaks off and there’s no heading back. I try to keep things harmonically matched or complimented and I try to do the same with the energy levels of my sets whether I’m playing Dubstep, DnB or Tech-house.
