LU48, Deadbeat FM

The Deadbeat FM DJ/Producer duo is dedicated to bringing a vulgar new sound to the tech scene. They are the unholy union of notorious psy-trance scoundrel, Deliriant (Shane), with several international releases under his belt, and Johnny Rook (Piers), the shady breaks peddler from the seediest bars downtown.

The Deadbeat FM sound is not tied down by genre, but delves mostly into the grimy underworld of techno and tech house; making use of dirty bass lines, fat kicks and huge drums & percussion, often with a driving yet minimalist undertone.

Being the first South African outfit to make it onto the exclusive UK record label LOT49, the Joburg based duo is making waves internationally. The hit EP “When I get outta here” spent over a week on Beatport as the Number 1 download of LOT49, and is still sitting pretty in the Top 10 at the moment.

As of late, Deadbeat FM are influenced by the crossover sounds dominated by the likes of Kid Blue, D-Nox and Beckers, Wehbba, Perfect Stranger, Khainz, Miki Litvak etc.

If you haven’t yet had the guilty pleasure of vibrating to Deadbeat FM airwaves, be sure to stay tuned. Keep it deadly.

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
The sounds we produce and the sounds we play are quite different; we play anything from techno to tech house to minimal tech – as long as it’s banging! As far as our production is concerned, I’d say we have quite a strong tech house vibe, with that dirty Joburg influence driving the bass.

What/who have been Influences in your life?
Shane’s mom, that is all.

Who are some of your favourite producers & djs?
Our favourite producer is Beckers, we also love Perfect Stranger, Riktam, Kid Blue, Quantize, the list goes on….

Best memories as a DJ?
Our best set was probably at this year’s Fu-Cha Summer Stomp, the vibe was awesome and people were going crazy. I think that’s the most fun we’ve ever had as Deadbeat FM, nothing beats a huge outdoor party.

What equipment do you use?
We are sponsored by Aerial7 headphones, so we’re sorted in that department. As for CDJ’s and mixers, we love the Pioneer stuff, but we’ll use anything if we have to. For production we use a dual core PC, Rockit KRK 6’s and a Virus TI Desktop.

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
Expect lots of huge basslines, top quality tech tracks, awesome mixing and killer dancefloor vibes.
