LU49, Dean Fuel

“It’s safe to say Dean Fuel is one of the most accomplished DJs this side of the equator. His career reads like a dance music fairytale. He’s held his own against some of the worlds most respected and influential DJ and producers. Not content with dominating the Cape Town club scene, Dean has also moved into the studio and subsequently released dance-floor destroyers on both local and international labels. His ability to blend a range of electronic genres to ass-shaking effect has made him one of Cape Town’s hottest dance exports. Put your hands up for…. Dean Fuel.” Heather Mennel – Soul Candi Records

Can you describe your personal sound in a bit more detail?
The music I play has certainly matured; this has been as a result of me learning to be more confident in myself, and my selection of music. Essentially I have always loved all styles of electronic music, and this has always come through n my sound. The biggest influence on my style though is really dictated by what the producers of the world are making… as their abilities and methods change, so does the music. … Is it techno, is it electro, is it progressive? My sound always will be about fusing different elements into a unique intercontinental blend.

Who/what have been Influences in your life?
I am inspired by my friends, some of the best producers and DJ’s I’ve ever worked with, and who just happen to be some of the coolest people I know! I am inspired by watching and learning from other DJ’s and producers all the time, in this industry you can never stop learning and improving. This may sound lame, but my girlfriend is also a constant source of inspiration and motivation, and definitely helps keep my head in the game.

Who are some of your favourite producers & DJ’s?
DJ’s: Sasha, Steve Lawler, Carl Cox, Sven Vath,
Producer’s: Dubfire, Pryda, Cirez D, Deadmau5, Sebastian Leger, Stephan Bodzin

Best memories as a DJ?
Phew… WAY too many to mention! Opening for Armin Van Buuren, and closing for Infected Mushroom were both insane experiences! But I would probably have to say opening for Sasha in Cape Town ranks as one of the best, as Sasha, who is one of my idols, came to the event early to hear my set – it was the ultimate nod of approval and one of the best compliments I have ever had from a world leading DJ.

What equipment do you use?
I am a Pioneer fan all the way! I love their CD turntables (CDJ1000 and now CDJ2000) as well as mixers (DJM800). It gets quite technical – but they make reliable, easy to use gear, that has great sound quality, and lets me do what I need to in order to best mix my music. I also like to set up my effects unit (EFX1000) – also by Pioneer – which lets me do crazy and unique things to the sounds and beats when I play.

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
I want them to feel that they had an experience! That they joined me in the journey that was my set, that of the music I played, they either loved it because they knew it, or loved it because they have never heard it before and it inspired them! As a DJ I always watch the crowd in front of me, and make sure that I have their attention, that they come with me, and let me push them as far as they can go! A fan told me the other day that he loved my sets because I had the ability to “bend” music – loved that! ;)

Can you give us the tracklisting for your mix?
Sure … but you will have to go to my fan page on Facebook to find it :)
