WELCOME TO THE HALF-CENTURY!
Since its inception in late 2008, the Listenup Podcast series has featured a host of South Africa’s finest DJs and producers, treating your ears to the full breadth and depth of electronic music today.
Now, for our landmark 50th instalment we return to MALONE, the highly respected veteran who started it all off for us. (See LU01 for his Sept ‘08 inaugural podcast – the most popular mix in Listenup history thus far.)
This time around, Cape Town’s reclusive master of breakbeat gives you Brokenscape – a sprawling epic composed of BREAKS, GLITCH HOP, DUBSTEP, ELECTRONICA, DRUM & BASS, and REGGAE flavour.
“It’s probably the most ambitious and wide-ranging mix I’ve done in 12 years of DJing,” he says. “I approached the task with a simple, hypothetical question: If this was to be my final mix ever, how would I do myself justice? The result, I think, has satisfied the premise. And what ties it all together is my signature sound, which I call Dirty Grace: equal parts melody, soul and aggression.
“Just over a year in the making, Brokenscape was mixed live in one take. It’s designed to surprise, to rock, and to receive many rotations. Therein I hope it succeeds. Thank you for listening, and to all those who’ve seen me perform over the years – thanks ever so much for doing your nut.”
