LU52, Emoutikon

Emile Oudejans a.k.a. Emoutikon, first came across the art of producing dance music when he encountered his first production program, Ejay. From there on he was hooked and has been producing for over 9 years; progressing through programs such as Fruityloops, Reason and finally Cubase. His love has always been house; listening to hours of it as an adolescent. Being introduced into the Psy-trance scene has also brought a great deal of influence to his style and understanding of electronic dance music. He now produces and DJ’s a range of Minimal Techno, Tech House, Progressive and Psy-trance (Jekyll and Hyde). Emoutikon was signed to Recode Recordings (UK) in 2009 and PsynOpticz (SA) in 2010.

Can you describe you personal sound in a bit more detail?
I’ve always loved deep low bass that gets you right in the pit of your body, so in terms of my overall sound, deep groovy amazing bass is essential. My DJ sets can catch a psy element with some old school bouncy hats and drums. Also tracks that take you on a deep sound journey grab me immediately. My production sound on the other hand is quite spread out, from Minimal Techno, Electro to Progressive, but always keeping that essential bass. I love it loud, so tracks that you just know are going to sound good on a massive rig are a must have.

What/who have been influences in your life?
My biggest influence I must first say is my brother. He has been a huge influence in terms of my passion and career. In general though just plain music. Music of the time and the past. I have a natural ability to single out sound in music so when I hear a particular sound I like, it virtually inspires me. Also the track Christian Smith and John Selway – Total Departure (Nihad Tule Remix) inspired me a lot in terms of today’s sound. Also being introduced into the Psytrance scene has influenced me a great deal in terms of my production and understanding of dance music.

Who are some of your favourite producers & DJ’s?
Some of my favourite producers and DJ’s at the moment are firstly without a doubt Spektre. These guys are just rocking it in terms of production. Huge influence. Also artists such as Fernando Tessis, D-nox and Beckers, Skober, Umek, James Harcourt, Fergie, Wehbba, Alex Di Stefano, Dyno, Dopamine, Dandi & Ugo, Piatto, Daniel Portman and many more. These are always changing. Some of my favourite local artists include: Gio Ricca, Lilphil, Rob Gonzo, Danalog, Kanan K7, Organick Panick, El Gordo and more…

Best memories as a DJ?
Since I only started DJ’ing professionally in 2009, I would have to say my first outdoor gig at Alien Safari “Flying Circus” in December 2009, was my most memorable. Huge rig, massive crowd and good vibes. I really had the best time of my life. I might have been jamming harder than the punters. I also had a great feedback from that set.

What equipment do you use?
In terms of DJ’ing I still use “old school” CDJ’s. Lol. And production wise I use Cubase 5, with an Axiom 49 midi keyboard, Rokit 8 speakers and a Mbox 2 pro soundcard and of course a monster laptop (PC).

What can listeners/dance floors expect from a typical set of yours?
My sets may vary in terms of a club or outdoor gig. Club gigs I tend to keep it a bit more uplifted with a few more electro elements and a hint of commercial tech. But my outdoor gigs are definitely where I feel at home and unleash my true sound. Amazing deep sounds, heavy bass, driving drumlines with psy elements….
